The Ida Bar by Sibling Architecture

The Ida Bar is the only licensed venue on the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus—a vibrant and inclusive space designed for students, staff, and visitors. More than just a bar, it serves as a hub for dining, working, relaxing, and socialising, with a full commercial kitchen and a mobile DJ booth that transforms the space for events. Located within the 1970s Doug McConnell building—the interior was designed by Sibling Architecture to reflect student life today, balancing flexibility, colour, and a playful approach to form.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere, supporting the space’s multifunctional use while enhancing its architectural identity. Sphera worked closely with the design team to deliver a considered lighting solution that is both practical and expressive. A standout feature is the curved and bent lines that weave through the space to soften the rigid forms of the building and guide movement from one zone to the next. This continuous visual language helps tie together the different functions of the bar—whether it’s a quiet study nook by day or a lively social venue by night.

Complementing this are layers of light chosen to bring depth, warmth, and flexibility to the interior. From ambient washes to focused task zones and colour-changing accents, the lighting elevates the user experience and defines the character of the space. The result is a dynamic, welcoming environment where lighting isn’t just a backdrop—it’s integral to the way people engage, gather, and unwind.
